For many, the path to becoming a healthcare professional follows a traditional, linear track. For Shadoe Himle, a graduate of National Holistic Institute’s San Jose campus, the path was forged through the grit of mixed martial arts training and the demanding physical labor of the oil and gas industry.
Today, Shadoe is a dual-certified massage therapist, having completed both NHI’s foundational Core Massage Therapy Program and the Advanced Neuromuscular Therapy (ANMT) Program. What makes his achievement even more remarkable is that he accomplished it all while simultaneously earning his high school diploma through NHI’s specialized C4L Academy program—completely transforming his career, his education, and his family’s future in the process.
The Fighter’s Understanding of Recovery
My story truly starts as a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter. Long before I ever considered bodywork as a professional career, I lived and breathed athletic performance. Years of intense training, grueling weight cuts, competing, and constantly pushing my body to its absolute limits taught me the vital necessity of recovery, mobility, and structural alignment.
I experienced firsthand how targeted bodywork could mean the difference between peak performance and a debilitating injury.
While I was competing, I was also working full-time in the heavy oil and gas industry. It was demanding work that allowed me to provide for my family, but deep down, I always knew I wanted something different. I wanted a career where I wasn’t just performing heavy labor, but rather making a direct, positive impact on people’s lives and health every single day. I just wasn’t entirely sure how to bridge the gap between where I was and where I wanted to be.
Overcoming Educational Barriers with C4L Academy
That is exactly where National Holistic Institute changed everything for me. For a long time, not having a high school diploma felt like a closed door to higher education and professional advancement. But NHI looks at a student’s potential rather than their past limitations.
Through NHI’s partnership with the C4L Academy program, I was given an opportunity to earn my accredited high school diploma while simultaneously enrolling in my massage therapy coursework. NHI opened a door that I honestly never thought would lead me to where I stand today.
Being able to balance my high school coursework alongside the hands-on training at the San Jose campus was intense, but it gave me a completely new sense of purpose. I didn’t just stop at the basics. After successfully completing the high school program and graduating from the Core Massage Therapy Program, I immediately chose to further my education by diving straight into the Advanced Neuromuscular Therapy (ANMT) Program.
From the Oil Fields to the Treatment Room
What started as a vulnerable chance to further my education quickly evolved into a profound new career and a lifelong calling. The advanced training in the ANMT program allowed me to take my background in MMA and combine it with sophisticated, clinical knowledge of corrective soft-tissue manipulation, trigger point therapy, and biomechanics.
Today, I get to use that specialized education to help athletes move better, recover faster from injuries, perform at their absolute highest level, and live their lives with substantially less pain. I transitioned out of the oil fields and walked directly into the treatment room. I get to wake up every morning and do something that I am genuinely, deeply passionate about.
None of this would have been possible without the incredible ecosystem of support at NHI’s San Jose campus. I am incredibly grateful for the brilliant instructors, the mentors who guided my hands-on technique, my dedicated classmates, and everyone at NHI who helped me along the way. Thank you for believing in me, investing in my potential, and helping me build a future that I can be genuinely proud of. It has been an amazing journey, and I am excited for every client I get to help next.

Neuromuscular Therapy for Athletes FAQ
Q: How does neuromuscular therapy benefit competitive athletes?
A: Advanced Neuromuscular Therapy (ANMT) goes beyond general relaxation to target specific soft-tissue abnormalities, hypertonicity, and trigger points that restrict athletic movement. By addressing postural distortions, restoring structural balance, and improving nervous system communication with muscular tissue, ANMT significantly enhances flexibility, power output, and overall joint mechanics while drastically reducing injury risks.
Q: Can you attend NHI if you do not have a high school diploma or GED?
A: Yes. Through NHI’s unique partnership with C4L Academy, eligible students who do not possess a high school diploma or GED can earn an accredited high school diploma online while concurrently completing their massage therapy training. This program eliminates historical educational barriers, allowing students to access Federal Financial Aid (for those who qualify) and transition directly into a professional career.
Q: What is the difference between the Core Program and the ANMT Program?
A: NHI’s 800-hour Core Massage Therapy Program establishes a comprehensive foundation in Swedish, deep tissue, shiatsu, acupressure, and sports massage, preparing students for general certification and practice. The 450-hour ANMT Program is an advanced, clinically-oriented curriculum that focuses deeply on pathophysiology, structural assessment, neuromuscular rebuilding, and targeted pain management strategies for complex or chronic soft-tissue conditions.
