Transitioning from military life to the civilian world is a monumental shift—one often filled with uncertainty and the search for a new mission. For Andromeda (aka Andi) Kincaid, a U.S. Navy veteran and recent graduate of NHI’s Santa Rosa campus, that mission found its home in the healing arts.
“I just graduated from the Core Massage Therapy Program, and it was exactly what I needed as I transitioned out of the military and started building a brand-new foundation for my life,” Andi shares. “Making big changes can feel scary, but I’ve felt so supported at NHI. It has been a soft place to land in the midst of uncertainty.”
A Seamless Transition

For many veterans, navigating the logistics of education can be a barrier. Andi found that the NHI team made the “sailor-to-civilian” transition feel effortless.
From the initial admissions process to the comprehensive financial aid support, the Santa Rosa team ensured that Andi could focus on her new foundation rather than the paperwork.
“The program is flexible,” Andi notes. “They get that we have jobs, kids, and old habits to unlearn. The staff have been kind, encouraging, and understanding, and the curriculum is broad enough that there is truly something for everyone.”
Empowerment Through Thai Massage
One of Andi’s initial concerns was her “delicate frame”—a common worry for smaller practitioners entering a physically demanding field. However, her time in the Core Program introduced her to a modality that changed her perspective entirely: Thai Massage.
“Thai massage has empowered me!” Andi says. “It’s like a beautiful dance where you use your own body to gently move and support your client. I’m confident knowing I can support someone twice my size!” By learning to use leverage and body weight rather than just muscular force, Andi discovered that her frame was not a limitation, but a tool for grace and precision.
Looking Toward a Future of Presence and Safety
Andi’s goals for her career are rooted in deep empathy. She hopes to become trauma- and nervous system-informed, focusing on creating a sense of safety and connection for her clients. Her vision for the future is as vast as the field itself, including dreams of learning infant massage when she becomes a mother and eventually teaching and advocating for the profession.
Advice for the Next Generation
For those considering a career in massage therapy, especially those coming from a structured background like the military, Andi offers this wisdom:
“The field itself is infinite; there’s nothing you can’t do! As with anything, take good care of yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually. You can’t pour from an empty cup! If you find there’s something you don’t like, I challenge you to see it as an opportunity to make this field better for all.”
