At nearly 50 years old, James embarked on a journey of self-discovery, ultimately finding his passion and purpose in massage therapy at the National Holistic Institute in Sacramento.

The question took James back to his childhood dreams. What were his talents? What passions lay dormant within him? The answer came unexpectedly during a simple act of care for his partner. While rubbing her shoulders to ease her stress, a profound clarity washed over him: Massage Therapy. It felt right, a whisper of affirmation echoing past compliments about his “good hands.”

James began researching schools and the path to becoming a massage therapist. After connecting with NHI and visiting the Sacramento campus, he knew he had found his place. “I was in, and everything started lining up; life was on the right track,” he recalls. As he progressed through the Core Program, James recognized that he had found his calling, the very thing he needed to be doing at this pivotal time in his life. The journey was filled with amazing people and a growing sense of purpose.

Even when faced with the devastating loss of his eldest child, the support of his family and the NHI community provided strength and reaffirmed his path. “I was very grateful for all those around me. The support for family and school helped carry on, confirming that this was the place I was meant to be.”

James chose NHI because of the curriculum’s depth, the comprehensive knowledge offered, and the effective approach to learning. The program didn’t just teach techniques; it ignited a passion within him. “They fueled my passion to be a healer and enjoy going to work, making it not feel like work when I am in that treatment room.”

Driven by a desire to deepen his skills and offer more comprehensive help to his clients, James continued his education with the Advanced Neuromuscular Therapy (ANMT) Program and the Associates of Applied Science Degree Program. “I wanted the knowledge and experience. I wanted to set myself apart from the crowd and provide the best help possible to my clients,” he explains. Achieving a degree for the first time in his life was also a significant personal milestone.

Advanced Training for Deeper Impact

The ANMT program equipped James with the ability to address client issues in often-overlooked muscles, providing multiple techniques for various needs. His biggest takeaway from the ANMT program was a nuanced understanding of pressure: “Pressure isn’t about how hard you can push but knowing where and why and deep isn’t hard and bruising but getting down through the layers of muscles in a therapeutic way.”

The Associates of Applied Science Degree Program expanded his understanding of the body, particularly the crucial role of fascia. This knowledge allows him to manage client issues more effectively and communicate with other medical professionals in a well-qualified manner. “The understanding of the fascia has been amazing, and as I continue to learn more and complete the program, I can easily work with medical professionals in a well-qualified way.”

These advanced programs have also opened doors to new career opportunities. James sees potential in collaborating with other medical practices that value specialized soft tissue training.
